Elizabeth Jennings

Elizabeth Jennings was a British poet (1926-2001) who is associated with the influential 'Movement' group of the mid-1950s that included her friends Kingsley Amis and Philip Larkin. Her popularity and success grew during the 1960s and 1970s and she won the W. H. Smith award for her Collected Poems, 1953-85 in 1987. She was awarded a CBE in 1992 and was still a best-selling poet at the time of her death. Her publisher Michael Schmidt described her as "the most unconditionally loved writer" of her generation and yet her position in twentieth-century British poetry is unstable. This online edition of her works and contextual material--accessed from the link on the left-- draws on the large amount of archival correspondence, journals, poetry notebooks, poetry drafts and unpublished autobiography that are distributed in the United States and Britain. It was created by the CTS's Dr Jane Dowson to stimulate new interest in and discussion of Jennings's work.
